Fine 434pp+350pp+491pp+516pp, beautiful original binding, quarter-bound with dark-chocolate colored leather spines and fore-edge corners over dark-green boards, blue, green and gold mottled endpapers, gold title blocks and motifs, raised bands and gilt trim to spine. An extremely rare original set. Boards and leather edges remain clean and sharp, spine gilt bright and clean, all binding remains tight and firm. Thompson contributed up-to-date information on the birds of Ireland to Selby’s The Magazine of Zoology and Botany, The Annals of Natural History, The Magazine of Natural History, and the Annals and Magazine of Natural History, and prepared the first comprehensive list of Ireland’s birds for the 1840 meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Glasgow. This seminal work was used by contemporary and later authors such as Francis Orpen Morris, co-founder of the Plumage League.
